Keep Pets Warm For The Winter

While pets are a part of the family, many spend most of their lives outside. If you live in an area where it can become very cold during the winter, consider providing a warm place for your pet to spend the nights outside of the cold of the winter weather. Consider allowing the pet inside a mud room or garage where they can have a break from the bad weather.

Sometimes it is cold even inside a garage or mudroom. A well designed dogs bed will help to keep your pet more comfortable. Even an old blanket or towel beats nothing at all for the dog to sleep on. These materials help to insulate the pets body from the cold concrete floor and to keep him or her warm during the night.

If it is still too cold even in the mudroom or garage for your pet, you may want to consider adding a portable space heater. Just be sure that it is away from anything combustible, and that the cord is not somewhere that you pet could chew into it or knock the heater over. Most of these heaters do have an emergency switch that will turn them off if they are tipped.

Sometimes outside pets get wet and muddy before coming inside. If there is a muddy mess in the pets room, try using your Hoover wet dry vacuum to clean up. Once you get the water and mud picked up, you will want to use an old towel to remove the remainder of the mess. The vacuum will also pick up excess pet hair after the pet moves back outside to his favorite dog run.

If you cannot provide a place in the house for the pet, be sure that you at least provide a well insulated dog house. A waterproof piece of burlap can be hung over the door to keep the wind from blowing into the house and keep heat inside. Inside the dog house, add straw or wood shavings that will allow the pet to burrow down and keep even warmer.

Pets that stay outside during the cold will need an extra portion of food for these very cold days. Their bodies require the food in order to provide the heat that is needed for them to keep warm.

If the temperatures have dropped below freezing, be sure that you have provided fresh water for the pet. The cold winds can cause dehydration and put your pet’s health in danger.
