Laptop monitor has large stripes down one side?

I have an old Compaq laptop (5-6 years old) which has just yesterday began displaying 2 wide stripes down the right side (taking up half the screen). No displayed images/icons/mouse pointer are visible “under” the stripes. Other than that the laptop performace seems ok. Any hints?

i don’t think these are dead pixels (pixels don’t die in straight geometric patterns like stripes).

you should check the behaviour on a external monitor. if it shows all fine, the most likely part that is gone is the inverter. this is a part within the screen and can be replaced. inverters will be sold on ebay for almost all laptop brands and cost around $20 – $25. how to replace an inverter can be found in the service manual.
